Sounds can pass through and be heard clearly at safe levels, including speech, while potentially harmful noises are reduced through a patented design incorporating a special noise-reducing filter.

A sliding switch allows the user to control the level of ambient sound while maintaining situational awareness. In the open position, the filters allow ambient sounds and conversations to be heard clearly. In high-noise environments, closing the switch increases the effectiveness of noise blocking. Ambient background noise is reduced by 21 dB, with up to 40 dB of protection against loud noises.
